Tomorrow marks the first day of spring! This is an exciting time when we can enjoy the outdoors, clean our homes, and watch the world come back to life again.
*sneeze*
*sniffle*
*wheeze*
Spring also marks the beginning of seasonal allergies for at least 20% of the population. As plants start to grow, windows are opened, more time is spent outside -- our exposure to pollen in the air also drastically increases. The result? Sneezing, runny noses, and itchy eyes to name a few. These symptoms can make enjoying spring challenging for many.
Treatment options are abound -- allergy shots, antihistamines, decongestants. Unfortunately it can be an uphill battle to find the right treatment option that minimizes side effects like drowsiness.
At Mountain Naturals, we have a different approach. There are nutrients that work together to support a normal immune response and respiratory function. Aller-DMG combines 6 of those nutrients to support the immune system, respiratory system, and proper histamine levels.
So go outside, shake out your carpets, or pet a kitten. Allergies aren't fun, but they shouldn't stop you from having some.
To living without sneezing,
Rebecca

Sunshine Vitamin
Eventually, Vermont will transition out of Winter, and into something resembling Spring. Actually, it is formally called Mud Season around here, but Vermonters will follow the rest of the country in getting outside and enjoying the weather.
The ongoing dilemma involves the benefits of being out in the sun, and the risks. The benefits are clear -- not only are there very few pleasures comparable to having the sun shine on your face, but it helps your body produce Vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for bone health, and they are now discovering that it plays an important role in teen health as well.
The difficulty is getting enough Vitamin D. Sun of course is a great source, but those with darker skin may not produce it as quickly, and caution needs to be taken with sun exposure due to the potential for skin damage. And there is an inconvenient, yearly occurrence called Winter, which can hamper attempts to relax in the sun. Vitamin D can also be found in oily fish and fortified milk.
Recent studies have shown that most teens aren't getting enough Vitamin D. While we add Vitamin D to our Calcium supplements, we also offer Vitamin D on its own for those of us who want to boost our Vitamin D intake during the Winter months, or already have a good sources of Calcium in their diets.
Looking forward to Spring,
Rebecca

Losing Sleep?
Theoretically, adults should sleep 7 to 8 hours a day.
For the average adult these days, that is just about as likely to happen as me finally getting the pony I have been asking for every year for my birthday.
Researchers are noting that the American public is sleeping even less these days - a recent poll showed that we are now averaging 6.7 hours of sleep a night.
So unless they start making the days longer, or our to-do list becomes magically shorter, we need to make sure that any time we actually get our heads within the general vicinity of our pillows, we are getting good quality sleep. There are a variety of methods you can use to develop that desired results -- aromatherapy, pharmaceuticals, relaxation exercises, etc. But do not doubt the power of a nutritional approach to getting some ZZZ's.
My two favorites:
L-Theanine capsules keep it simple -- just 200 mgs of that delightful amino acid that supports relaxation. L-Theanine actually helps your body create other calming amino acids and neurotransmitters -- Dopamine, GABA, Tryptophan etc. However it doesn't directly cause drowsiness; instead it just helps your body and mind relax enough that sleep begins to feel like a very achievable goal.
5-HTP is another type of amino acid -- it is the precursor to the feel-good neurotransmitter, Serotonin. We have added a dash of Vitamin B6 to help the conversion process along -- both to convert 5-HTP to Serotonin, and to help convert you into the blissful state of unconsciousness known as sleep.
Take care of yourself -- get some sleep!
Signing off before bedtime,
Rebecca

DMG History
FoodScience, the parent company of Mountain Naturals, has always been a family-owned company. Started by the Orlandis in the 1960's, they were using Dimethyglycine, or DMG, to increase stamina and endurance in racehorses. They also began discovering its benefits in people when the Orlandi family started taking DMG for their own health challenges.
The Orlandis gathered and translated the research conducted by the Danish, Russians, and Japanese, and filed for US patents based on that research. They saw a niche and decided to market the product to benefit others.
Since FoodScience was incorporated in 1973, it has offered a variety of supplements for both humans and animals, including DMG. Since that time, we have also learned more about the benefits of DMG. Dr. Roger Kendall has long been an advocate of DMG, and has continued to research the benefits of this unique nutrient.
DMG is a water-soluble nutrient that occurs naturally within the body. It is similar in structure to B vitamins, and was first known as Vitamin B15. It has been studied for its ability to modulate the immune system, reduce inflammation, and reduce lactic acid levels, to name a few. It has also been popularly used for neurological disorders such as seizures and autism.
The autism community has embraced DMG as a helpful nutrient. The letters we receive from around the country are incredible. Here is one of many:
My daughter is 5 years old and has been diagnosed with autism. She has been on DMG for a year, and the results have been wonderful. When we started her out on the DMG, she was a very frustrated little girl. She would scream and yell at the top of her lungs. She would not let you touch her, she would not look at your face, would not socialize with others, including her sister, uncles, grandparents and myself. Her sleep patterns were outrageous. She would go to bed at all hours and not sleep through the night. Her attention span was that of 3-5 minutes at home and pre-school. If something were out of the ordinary, like her schedule being disrupted, she would immediately begin to scream. This was so very hard for her to adjust to. We started her out on 2 tablets of 125 milligram DMG just to see if it made a difference, and the results were amazing. She began to talk, pay attention, respond, play with her sister, and show affection towards others. Her teachers said it was such a differences they thought she might be on Ritalin. I was quick to inform them that it was NOT Ritalin! She is now taking 5 of the 125 milligram tablets daily, and is doing wonderfully. She is potty trained, is pre-reading, spelling words, signing words, and playing with her sister. Her emotional side has also come out. She is concerned when someone is hurt. And is showing emotion when she misses someone. She is showing compassion for others. Her sleep patterns have become regular. She is in bed at 8:00 pm and sleeps till 6 or 7 am. When she has been thrown a curve ball in her schedule, she does not act out as she use to. She seems to take it with a grain of salt. This is a totally different child that I’ve dealt with this last year. The changes have all been for the good. I can’t tell you how grateful we are for DMG. I just wish that others might know of this to help their children.
Sincerely appreciative in Idaho
Mountain Naturals offers DMG in many of our formulas. From pure, sublingual DMG, to adding DMG into our joint support formulas and immune support formulas, Mountain Naturals recognizes the benefits of DMG for supporting many aspects of health.
