Eventually, Vermont will transition out of Winter, and into something resembling Spring. Actually, it is formally called Mud Season around here, but Vermonters will follow the rest of the country in getting outside and enjoying the weather.
The ongoing dilemma involves the benefits of being out in the sun, and the risks. The benefits are clear -- not only are there very few pleasures comparable to having the sun shine on your face, but it helps your body produce Vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for bone health, and they are now discovering that it plays an important role in teen health as well.
The difficulty is getting enough Vitamin D. Sun of course is a great source, but those with darker skin may not produce it as quickly, and caution needs to be taken with sun exposure due to the potential for skin damage. And there is an inconvenient, yearly occurrence called Winter, which can hamper attempts to relax in the sun. Vitamin D can also be found in oily fish and fortified milk.
Recent studies have shown that most teens aren't getting enough Vitamin D. While we add Vitamin D to our Calcium supplements, we also offer Vitamin D on its own for those of us who want to boost our Vitamin D intake during the Winter months, or already have a good sources of Calcium in their diets.
Looking forward to Spring,
Rebecca
